Marian Announces 2012 Hall of Fame Class
FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – Marian University Athletics has announced the inaugural induction class into the Athletic Hall of Fame. The Class of 2012 will consist of seven individual members, including two coaches/administrators, and one team. They will be honored Saturday, Oct. 6, 2012, in the Stayer Center Banquet Hall on campus.
The Class of 2012 includes: Brian Gillogly (Baseball – Coach), Kerri (Holz) Huebel ‘01 (Volleyball), Casey Jackson ‘90 (Men’s Basketball), Tanya (Wiesner) Leonhard ‘97 (Women’s Basketball), Bruce Prall (Administrator), Paul Sanchez ‘94 (Men’s Soccer), Mike Schaible ‘94 (Baseball) and the 1993 Baseball Team.
The celebration will take place in conjunction with Homecoming weekend, Fri.-Sat., Oct. 5-6. There will be a Hall of Fame Golf Outing to take place on Friday. On Saturday, an introduction of the inductees will occur during halftime of the men’s soccer game, which begins at 2:30 p.m., followed by the Hall of Fame banquet later on that evening at 5:30 p.m.

BRIAN GILLOGLY
Baseball Coach: He was the very first baseball
coach at Marian, spending 12 seasons, while compiling an overall
record of 337-185-2 and a Lake Michigan Conference mark of 154-16,
good for a winning percentage of better than 90 percent. He led the
Sabres to six straight 30-win seasons and 11 straight 20-win
campaigns, collecting conference championships in 11 of his 12
seasons at the helm. He was LMC Coach of the Year eight times. In
1995, he earned NAIA National Coach of the Year honors, while
adding NAIA Midwest Region Coach of the Year in 1993, NAIA District
14 Coach of the Year in 1993 and 1994, as well as WBCA Coach of the
Year accolades in 1990. Beginning in 1990, the Sabres appeared in
six straight district championships, winning three of those,
including a 1993 win that led to a regional championship and NAIA
World Series appearance. He coached nine LMC Players of the Year,
32 NAIA All-District honorees, eight NAIA Honorable Mention
All-Americans and one MLB Amateur Draft pick.
KERRI (HOLZ)
HUEBEL
Volleyball, Women’s Basketball: Lettered in both volleyball
and basketball. An outstanding volleyball player and still ranks
first in matches played (142), sets played (501) and assists
(5,266). She also ranks second in kill percentage (.333), fourth in
aces (124), sixth in digs (1,107) and ninth in assisted blocks
(223). Over four seasons with the volleyball team, she never lost a
conference match (48-0) and qualified for the national tournament
twice. Each year, her teams won at least 28 games, including the
2000 squad that compiled a school-record 30-6 mark. That year, she
was also named the Lake Michigan Conference Player of the Year and
earned her fourth All-Conference selection. In basketball, she
still ranks second in career three-pointers made (154), third in
three-point attempts (438), third in games started (100), fourth in
assists (303), fourth in steals (192) and 16th on the all-time
scoring list (886).
CASEY JACKSON
Basketball: Left his mark after just two seasons with the
men’s basketball team, transferring from Kaskaskia Community
College in 1987. He was a two-time All-Lake Michigan Conference
First Team selection twice, including the 1987-88 season, where he
also garnered All-WCIC and NAIA All-District honors after leading
the Sabres to their most prolific season in school history, posting
a 29-5 overall record, 14-0 mark in the LMC, while making an NAIA
District Playoffs appearance. Jackson scored 1,078 points in his
two seasons, which still stands as the 12th highest total in Marian
history, while his 16.6 points per game scoring average ranks tops
on the list.
TANYA
(LEONHARD) WIESNER
Women’s Basketball: Lettered all four years
in basketball. Was LMC Rookie of the Year in 1994, followed by
All-LMC honors in her next three seasons as well. In 1995, she
averaged 23 points and 13.1 rebounds per game, earning her NAIA
All-Region and Third Team All-American honors. Two years later,
Leonhard repeated as an All-American selection after averaging 20.4
points and 13.1 rebounds per game. Her impeccable knack for getting
to the basket enabled her to post 1,958 points in her career, which
still stands as the most in school history. Her 19.2 points per
game scoring average is also tops on the list. She also ranks atop
the record books in field goals made (755), free throws made (446),
rebounds (1,127), rebound average (11.0) and steals (201).
She’s third all-time in field goal percentage (.479) and
blocked shots (85).
Dr. BRUCE PRALL
Administrator: He is entering his 40th year at Marian and has
served in numerous administrative capacities over his time. He
pioneered athletics at Marian, establishing women’s
basketball as the school’s first sponsored sport back in
1970, and thus also becoming the school’s first athletic
director. He coached the women’s team for five seasons before
switching over the men’s basketball for a short time when the
school became co-ed in the early 70’s. He hired some of
Marian’s most successful coaches, including this year’s
inductee, Brian Gillogly. He now serves as the university’s
faculty athletic representative, as well as a chemistry professor,
a position he has held for as long as he’s graced Marian with
his presence.
PAUL SANCHEZ
Men’s Soccer: Lettered four years in soccer. A defender,
Sanchez was the backbone of four NAIA District Playoff teams,
including a 1993 Lake Michigan Conference Championship squad that
went 8-0 in LMC play and allowed just five goals to league
opponents. He ranks 12th on the all-time scoring list with 14 goals
and 13 assists for 41 points in 73 contests. As a sophomore, he
tallied three goals and five assists to earn All-LMC, NAIA
All-District and All-Area honors. A year later, he was an honorable
mention NAIA All-American after tallying 15 points (7 goals, 1
assist). As a senior, he made it three year straight seasons as an
All-LMC and All-District selection.
MIKE SCHAIBLE
Baseball: Lettered four years in baseball. He was a four-time
First Team All-Lake Michigan Conference and All-District 14
selection and two-time All-Midwest Region and NAIA All-American
honorable mention pick. As a senior, he slugged 14 home runs and
drove in 52 RBI, while hitting .387 at the plate to take LMC and
All-District Player of the Year and honors. He continues to lay
claim to several Marian records as he maintains his all-time career
lead in games played (194), hits (218), doubles (53), home runs
(36), runs scored (190), RBI (203), walks (128) and total bases
(387). He ranks third in both slugging (.667) and on-base (.489)
percentage.
1993 BASEBALL
TEAM
The 1993 baseball team was a dominating squad that compiled a
school-record 38 wins against just 13 losses. The Sabres put
together an 18-game winning streak, the longest in school history
that culminated with a perfect 16-0 record in the Lake Michigan
Conference. Marian then went on to sweep through the LMC
tournament, District 14 tournament and Midwest Regional en route to
an NAIA College World Series appearance. The Sabres put six players
on the All-LMC team, including first baseman Mike Schaible, second
baseman Steve Wipperfurth, designated hitter Tom Fogle, pitchers
Matt Lorge and Troy Stettbacher and outfielder Jeff Hencke, who
also earned Player of the Year honors. Head Coach Brian Gillogly
was named Coach of the Year and outfielders James Maurer and Shane
Nelson and catcher Kent Ellingson all earned honorable
mention accolades. Tom Katz, Schaible, Wipperfurth, Hencke, Fogle
and Ellingson all earned All-District honors, while Wipperfurth,
Schaible, Hencke and Katz also earned All-Region accolades. Hencke,
Schaible, Wipperfurth and Katz each were selected as honorable
mention All-Americans.
