MARQUETTE, Mich. - No. 6 Marian University men's ACHA hockey (16-3-0, 11-1-0 NCHL) closed out the regular season sweeping Northern Michigan University.
In Friday night's opening contest Tanner Duffney, of No. 6 Marian University, got the scoring started only 56 seconds into the first period with an assist by Bryton Tomko, though it would be the only goal of the period.
At the 5:24 mark of the second period Marian's Colin Wilson, assisted by Braxton Davis, increased the lead to two. Just over seven minutes later the score became 3-0 when Tomko was able to find the back of the net, assisted by Jake Weldon. Lonnie Clary put one home, with an assist by Wilson, at the 16:56 mark, increasing the lead to four. As the teams headed into the second intermission Marian led 4-0.
Tomko netted his second goal of the game 4:53 into the third off an assist by Duffney. With 7:23 remaining in the third period Duffney scored his second goal of the game, assisted by Daniel Roe and Paul Kinder Li, putting the Sabres up 6-0. Wilson increased Marian's lead 1:43 later with assists credited to Clary and Tanner Pagendam. With 58 seconds remaining in the game Collin Klein, assisted by Michael Bostwick finished the scoring for Marian and the game. At the end of regulation Marian shutout NMU 8-0.
Earning the shutout for Marian was Fredrik Radbjer, stopping all 17 shots he faced. In a losing effort for NMU Zach Kooi turned back 43 of the 51 shots Marian put on net.
Marian applied pressure in game two, as in game one, right from the start and did not let up. At the 4:01 mark of the first Bryton Tomko got Marian on the board, with an assist by Jake Weldon. The lead became two 5:04 later when Tanner Pagendam, from Lonnie Clary and Colin Wilson, put one past NMU goaltender Zach Kooi. Wilson netted the third Marian goal at 17:09, assisted by Pagendam and Paul Kinder Li. The first period came to a close with Marian leading 3-0.
Only one goal would be scored during the second 20 minutes of play and it came off the stick of Tomko 2:58 into the period. Assists on Tomko's goal were credited to Wilson and Weldon. At the end of two periods of play Marian increased their lead to 4-0.
At the 13:07 mark of the third period Marian once again increased their lead when Clary found the back of the net, assisted by Pagendam, while on the power play. With just under four minutes remaining Pagendam scored to put Marian up 6-0, he was assisted by Clary and Wilson. When the final horn sounded Marian led 6-0 and completed the weekend sweep.
Marian's Justin Davidson earned the shutout victory by turning away all 24 shots that came his way. Credited for the loss was Zach Kooi, stopping 47 of 53 shots.
Marian opens the NCHL Tournament Saturday, Feb. 18 at 4 p.m. when they will play the lowest seed remaining out of St. Mary's, Lewis or UW-Oshkosh.
