EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) -- In a rare opportunity for an NCAA Division III player, Marian University senior left-hander Sam Forkert will relish the chance to represent the Madison Mallards, a select bunch from the Northwoods League South Division, his native hometown of Sister Bay and the Sabres in the league's annual all-star game, which will take place at Eau Claire's Carson Park, tonight, July 23, at 7:35 p.m.
Forkert, who has put together a sterling resume this summer, has solidified himself as one of the top relief pitchers in the Northwoods League. The Sister Bay native has compiled a 3-0 record with a 0.78 ERA and a 35/9 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 34.2 innings pitched for the Mallards. His 0.87 WHIP and .174 opponents' batting average rank near the top of the league.
The 6-foot-6, 235-pounder played a major role in a bullpen that led the Mallards to a first-half South Division title and clinched one of just four spots in the 2013 Northwoods League Playoffs, which will begin in mid-August.
Forkert was a second-team All-Northern Athletics Conference selection in the spring after going 4-3 with a 3.07 ERA and 61 strikeouts over 58.2 innings pitched. The progression over his first three years in a Marian uniform, coupled with his unique opportunity these past two seasons in Madison, have developed him into a legitimate professional prospect.
Tonight's Northwood's League All-Star Game will be streamed live on the league's YouTube channel and can be found by clicking here: http://www.youtube.com/NorthwoodsLeague
The game, which is slated to begin at 7:35 p.m., will be preceded by the league's home run derby at 5:00 p.m.
