Sabre baseball rally falls short at Green Knights

Marian hitter gets ready to swing.

DE PERE, Wis. - Marian University baseball (6-12, 2-2 NACC) rallied in the ninth in a non-conference game at St. Norbert but fell to the Green Knights by an 8-3 final.

In a game that saw Marian use five pitchers, the Green Knights used one big inning to pull away from the Sabres when they opened the scoring with five runs in the third.  St. Norbert would add a pair of runs in the fifth and one run in the sixth.  Sophomore Steve McGowan provided 1.2 innings of three-hit ball allowing no runs, while junior Connor Nelson and freshman Taylor Middaugh each proved 1.0 innings of scoreless relief.

The Sabre offense would only manage three hits through the first eight innings of the game but managed to put together a rally in the ninth inning.  Senior Jordan Walker ended the shutout with a single that plated freshman Ryan Ellingson before a single from Ricky Lee brought in fellow freshman Alex Behr.  Junior Cole Clark then singled to plate Walker before a triple play ended the ball game.

Clark and Walker each went 2-4 in the loss with a run driven in.

Marian returns to the field tomorrow, Thursday, April 12 when the Sabres travel to MSOE for a NACC twin bill at noon.
