FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – Marian University Athletics has announced the release of its 2013 fall sport schedules, which includes men’s and women’s soccer, women’s volleyball and women’s tennis. All four programs compete in the 12-member Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (formerly known as the Northern Athletics Conference), established in 2006.
Men’s Soccer, which fell just short of a conference tournament bid, will return all but three of its starters in 2013. The Sabres will open the season in Atlanta, Ga. with a pair of challenging non-conference matches against Emory and Oglethorpe. They will then return home for the first of two three-game homestands this season, beginning with Lawrence in a Sept. 8 meeting at Smith Fields.
Half of men’s soccer’s 10 conference matches will be at home against the likes of MSOE, Wisconsin Lutheran, Dominican, Aurora and Lakeland. The regular season will wrap up with a stiff non-conference opponent in UW-Oshkosh, which the Sabres played to a scoreless tie at home a season ago. The conference tournament, which will get underway Nov. 2-9, will feature the top-six teams from the regular season and take place at the sites of the higher seeds.
The women’s soccer program finished fourth in the regular season in 2012 to qualify for the conference tournament and will host eight matches in 2013, including five home NACC contests.
The campaign will begin with Ripon in the season opener Aug. 30. A difficult non-conference slate features four state schools with UW-Whitewater and UW-Oshkosh invading Smith Fields. Home games against NACC opponents comprise the likes of MSOE, Dominican, Wisconsin Lutheran, Aurora and Lakeland.
That means the remaining six league matches will take place on the road this season, making Marian’s route to the conference tournament a little more difficult. The six-team postseason tournament will take place Nov. 3-9.
Women’s volleyball will begin the year at the Beloit College Invitational before opening up the home schedule against non-conference Ripon on Sept. 3.
Six of their 11 conference matches will take place in the friendly confines of Sadoff Gymnasium against the likes of Lakeland, Dominican, Benedictine, Aurora, Concordia Wisconsin, and MSOE.
For the first time, the league will pair up with the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for a showcase in Wisconsin Dells, Sept. 27-28. The Sabres will take on Luther, Simpson, Central and Buena Vista in the two-day event. The regular season will conclude on the road against former NACC member, Maranatha Baptist.
The season will culminate with the eight-team conference tournament Nov. 5-9.
The women’s tennis program qualified for the conference team tournament a year ago with a fifth place finish, marking its sixth postseason berth in the last seven years.
Eight home matches will be featured on the 2013 schedule, including a four-match homestand to open the year. The Sabres will host Ripon in the season opener Aug. 30, followed by the conference opener against Dominican and Concordia Chicago, Aug. 31.
A trip to Chicago’s Millenium Park to take on Calumet College of St. Joseph and Roosevelt will conclude the non-conference portion of the schedule Sept. 22. The NACC regular season schedule will wrap up with Concordia Wisconsin at home, Sept. 24. The league team tournament will have to wait until April 28-May 3.
