Sabres hold off Regents for NACC win

FOND DU LAC, Wis. - Marian University men's basketball (7-17, 6-13 NACC) held off a late Regent push defeating Rockford 86-82 at home in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference action.

The Regents jumped out to an early 11-10 lead before Marian used a quick 8-2 run to take an 18-13 lead, a lead they would not relinquish in the first half.  The Sabres would extend their lead out to as large as 11, but the Regents were able to battle back and cut the deficit down to three at 41-38 heading into halftime.

Rockford continued to stick around with Marian eventually tieing the game at 57-57.  The Sabre offense then went back to work and went on an 11-2 run to retake the lead at 68-59 with 9:03 left to play.  A layup from junior Reggie Roemer extended the lead out to 13 at 76-63 with 7:15 left to play when Rockford began to mount a comeback.

Similarly to the first half, the Regents cut into the Sabre lead slowly eventually bringing the game to an 84-82 Marian lead with 1:31 left in the game.  Neither offense was able to find a rhythm in the final minute and a pair of free throws from junior Alex Manhardt helped seal the game at 86-82.

Manhardt led the way with a team-high 18 points and nine boards, while freshman Will Polczynski finished with 13 points.  Freshman Danny Duchaj came off the bench to provide the Sabre offense 11 points.
