Men's Golf Takes Fifth at Benedictine Invite

WEST CHICAGO, Ill. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University men's golf team finished tied for fifth place in the 18-team tournament after shooting a team score of 317, 10 strokes back of first place St. Norbert College, at the Benedictine University Invitational at St. Andrews Golf and Country Club, this afternoon, Sept. 16.

Seniors Corey Ashbeck and Joey Bertram paced Marian by both shooting in the 70s. Freshmen Kyle Bruce and Chris Janisse followed up with an 81 and 82, respectively, as the Sabres tied with Wisconsin Lutheran for fifth place in the single day invite. Sophomore Max Richardson was forced to withdraw due to illness.

Ashbeck tied for seventh place overall with a round of 76, firing a 40 on the front and 36 on the back. Bertram shot back-to-back 39s to finish tied for 18th place with a 78.

St. Norbert claimed three top-seven finishers to win the tournament with a team score of 307. North Park finished second with a 310 as Robin Hakkanson won the individual title with a round of 70. Carthage sent a pair of JV squads that finished third and fourth at the invitational. Marian and Wisconsin Lutheran were the highest finishers of eight competing Northern Athletics Conference teams.
