Men's Golf Takes Second at WLC Invite

HARTFORD, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University men's golf team recorded its fourth third top-three finish of the season after taking second place at the Wisconsin Lutheran College Invitational at Washington County G.C. Sunday-Monday, Sept. 23-24.

The Sabres followed up a first round score of 310 with a second round 308 to finish at 618 (+42) and four shots behind tournament champion and perennial power, Carthage. Sophomore Max Richardson led Marian with a top-five finish after carding a 74 on day two to go with a first round score of 78 to finish eight-over par for the tournament.

Marian put three golfers in the top-nine and four in the top-14. Freshman Kyle Bruce shot back-to-back 77's to finish 10-over and in sole possession of eighth place. Reigning Northern Athletics Conference Golfer of the Week, senior Joe Bertram, finished tied for ninth place with a score of 11-over par (76-79-155).

Senior Cory Ashbeck finished two shots back of Bertram after a final round 78 to tie for 14th. Chris Janisse and Robbie Bailey shot a 169 and 176, respectively.

The Sabres currently lead the NAC with a scoring average of 311.2 strokes per round, more than 10 strokes better than Aurora, which ranks second at 321.3. Marian also has four players in the top-10 for individual scoring with Bertram leading the team and ranking fourth overall a 77.8 average.

The Sabres will take the weekend off and resume play at the Viterbo University Invite Oct. 7-8.
