HAVEN, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – A strong back nine effort by the Marian University men's golf team salvaged what looked to be a dismal performance during the first round of the Northern Athletics Conference Men's Golf Championship at Whistling Straits – Irish Course. The Sabres turned in a third-place score of 315, five strokes above their season average and within striking distance of first-place Edgewood, which carded a team score of 312.
Senior Joe Bertram led the five-man squad for the Sabres with a 75 (+3), following up a 41 on the front nine with a two-under on the more difficult back nine. Senior Cory Ashbeck shaved two shots off on the back to finish with 78 (+6), while sophomore Max Richardson turned in an 80 (+8), finishing even par on the way in.
Freshmen Kyle Bruce and Chris Janisse carded the best front nine scores for the Sabres with 39 and 40, respectively, but tapered off a bit on the back as they finished with scores of 82 (+10) and 84 (+12).
Lakeland's Matt Lewellyn was the leader in the clubhouse with a two-over 74 (+2), matched by only Edgewood's Kenny Rucker later on. Bertram sits tied for third with MSOE's Jacob Phelps at three-over.
Rain washed out day one of the championship on Sunday, so the 10 teams will play 54 holes in the spring at Stonebridge C.C. in Aurora, Ill. April 22-23, 2013.
