Sabres Fall to Bulldogs in Series Opener
ADRIAN, Mich. (SabreAthletics.com) – Three first period goals saw host Adrian College gain a commanding edge early on and it would look back as the Marian University men's hockey team fell by a score of 6-0 to the Bulldogs in MCHA action, this evening, Jan. 18, inside the Arrington Ice Arena.
The Bulldogs wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as Andrew Dovey lit the lamp just 19 seconds into the contest. Two more first period goals had the Sabres reeling as they entered the first intermission and they were unable to recover.
Adrian improved to 13-1-2 overall, 9-0-2 in the MCHA with the win, while Marian dropped to 7-8-1 (6-5-0 MCHA) with the loss.
Following Dovey's first period tally, the Bulldogs were on the board again before the midway point as Shaquille Merasty found the net. Then, with just four seconds remaining in the period, Lukas Ciotti scored to make it 3-0.
Shelby Gray made it 4-0 midway through the second period and Dovey added his second of the game before the second intermission.
The Bulldogs would add one more for good measure off the stick of Josh Cousineau in the third period before the final horn finally sounded.
Adrian outshot Marian, 37-23, while Scott Shakell recorded his first shutout of the season and third of his career with 23 saves.
Both teams will go at it again tomorrow afternoon. Puck is set to drop at 3 p.m. eastern, 2 p.m. central time.
