WAUKESHA, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – Forward Tyler Klein (Fargo, N.D.) and goalie Josh Baker (Canton, Mich.) earned weekly honors by the Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association, being named Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, the league office announced today, Feb. 4.
This marks the second time that two Sabres have been honored in the same week and it is Baker's second such honor this season after earning the award back on Jan. 14.
Klein scored twice in the final 13 minutes of Marian's 3-2 home victory over Lawrence last Saturday. His game-tying goal came on a breakaway at the 7:52 mark in the third period. He then converted Marian's second power play of the game with the game-winner, leaving just 8.5 seconds left on the game clock.
Klein leads the Sabres with 12 goals on the year and is tied for second in the MCHA.
Baker's second MCHA Defensive Player of the Week award came in a pair of gutsy efforts between the pipes. He stopped 41 shots in the series opener, a 3-1 victory in Appleton. Then followed it up with 36 more saves in the 3-2 win Saturday night, accumulating a .962 save percentage in the two-game effort.
The combined effort by the Sabres led to reclaiming the "Battle of 41" trophy and extending their lead in the MCHA North Division to six points with just four regular season games remaining. Marian seeks its fourth straight division title as it takes on Northland next, followed by Concordia Wisconsin to close out the regular season.
