Marian upset bid at No. 4/5 Adrian falls short

ADRIAN, Mich. - Goals in the final minute of the first period and second period were enough to lift No. 4/5 Adrian past Marian University men's hockey (15-10-2, 12-7-1 NCHA) with a final of 2-1.

The first period was a defensive battle on both sides with neither team able to get many shots on goal.  The Bulldogs were able to make a push late and found the back of the net at the 19:22 mark for the first score of the game.

The Sabres responded at the 4:16 mark when sophomore Nick Monfils caused a 2-on-1 while on the penalty kill and dished the puck to fellow sophomore Jake Howie who beat the blocker of the Adrian goalie.  The goal was number eight on the year for Howie and put the score at 1-1.

Once again, however, Adrian was able to create a breakaway in the final minute of the second period and headed into the locker room ahead 2-1.

The MU offense was able to rally in the final period and spent the final 32-seconds with a 6-on-4 opportunity but were unable to score leading to the 2-1 final.

Adrian finished the game with a 36-16 shot advantage with 11 different Sabre skaters recording a shot on goal.

Senior Mike Baldwin (13-7-2) took the loss between the pipes for Marian making 34 saves and held Adrian 0-3 on the power play.
