Men's Soccer Drops Opener, 3-0, to Beloit

FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University men's soccer team dropped its season and home opener, 3-0, to visiting Beloit College at Smith Fields this evening, Aug. 31. The Buccaneers netted one first half goal and quickly made it 3-0 by the 59th minute in the second half to grab a victory on opening night.

The Sabres managed 12 shots, including five on goal, but Beloit keeper, BJ Kiser, stood tall to the task to earn the victory. Marian's Bryce Woldt took the loss, making three saves in his first career start.

Marian falls to 0-1 on the young season, while Beloit moves to 1-0. It marked the first of five straight home games to open the 2012 campaign for the Sabres.

After few scoring opportunities by both squads, Beloit was finally able to penetrate the Marian defense in the 28th minute. Jackson Wilkins took a Marc Robinson pass through the middle of the field and blasted a right-footed rocket past Woldt for the game's first score.

It would remain 1-0 through halftime and Beloit used the momentum to take on some insurance goals early in the second half.

Robinson was the beneficiary on the second goal, scoring an unassisted tally just 1:29 into the second half. In the 59th minute, Aaron Clark then took a Wilkins pass and deposited well outside the reach of Woldt to blow the game wide open.

Javier Miranda recorded a team-high three shots, while Reinke added two, including a rocket from 15 yards that found the mid-section of Kiser for the save.

Marian will try to rebound this Sunday, Sept. 2, as it hosts Lawrence University at Smith Fields at 1 p.m.
