MILWAUKEE, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University men's soccer team fell to host Wisconsin Lutheran College, 2-1, in its Northern Athletics Conference opener on the road at Warrior Field this afternoon, Sept. 15.
The Sabres, who tied UW-Oshkosh earlier in the week with a 0-0 tie at home, used the same effort defensively to hold the Warriors off the board for the majority of the match today. However, Wisconsin Lutheran got on the board at the 70-minute mark and added a much-needed insurance goal two minutes later, one that proved the difference in the match.
The Warriors improved to 4-2 overall, 1-0 in the NAC, while the Sabres dropped to 0-4-2 (0-1 NAC).
The match remained scoreless until the 71st minute when WLC's Matt Bishop gave the home team a slight advantage on Reed Luengen's assist. Two minutes later, the Warriors made it a 2-0 score when Jake Semmann added an unassisted tally.
Marian's Rob Ogden got the Sabres on the board in the 85th minute to cut the deficit in half, but the Sabres were not able to find the tying goal before the clock ran out.
Marian will be back in action Wed., Sept. 19, when it plays host to Aurora at Smith Fields in Fond du Lac. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
