FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – Marian University men's soccer played well enough to win, but Maranatha Baptist Bible College did everything in its power not to lose as both teams played to a 1-1 Northern Athletics Conference draw following 110 minutes on Senior Night at Smith Fields this evening, Oct. 16.
David Reinke scored his third goal of the season, a 21st minute tally that gave Marian a 1-0 lead that lasted into halftime. Maranatha's Taylor Pill finally broke through with one of his three shots on the night to tie the game in the 75th minute. Neither team was able to find the net in overtime and the Sabres settled for their fifth tie of the season.
With the draw, Marian moved to 2-8-5 overall, 2-5-3 in the NAC, while Maranatha moved to 7-8-1 (3-5-1 NAC).
Reinke's goal was a big momentum boost for the Blue and White as it was the first goal in two games against the Crusaders after falling to them on the road, 1-0, a season ago. The halftime lead in the regular season home finale brought joy to a halftime celebration that recognized three Marian seniors: Denny Mudd, Rob Ogden and Everett Zank.
The Sabres started out strong in the second half, garnering several chances, but were unable to add to their slim lead. It left the door open for the Crusaders and they took advantage in the 75th minute as Pill bent one into the corner of the goal to knot the game at 1-1, a score that held through the end.
The Sabres settle for their fifth tie of the season despite leading in many statistical categories such as shots (20-14), shots on goal (7-4) and corner kicks (6-0).
Marian will hit the road for its final three regular season contests, taking on Robert Morris College-Springfield this Friday, Oct. 19, followed by a Sunday affair at Westminster (Mo.) and the NAC finale at Lakeland, Oct. 24.
