SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University men's soccer team settled for their sixth tie on the season as they visited Northern Athletics Conference foe, Lakeland Muskies this evening, Oct. 24.
Tie was the buzz word for the Sabre men's soccer team this season as they tallied their sixth tie on the season. Senior, Everett Zank finished his career scoring in his last collegiate game. Zank netted a goal, assisted by Ramon Sutherland, in the 20th minute of the match, but the Sabres were unable to hold the shutout as Muskie, Killian McKenzie scored late in the 73rd minute resulting in a 1-1 tie.
With the draw, Marian ends the 2012 season 3-9-6, 2-5-4 in the NAC, while Lakeland finished their season 2-14-3 (0-8-3 NAC).
Sabre keepers, Jameson Hoerter and Bryce Woldt kept busy as Marian was out shot 21-12, but their shots on goal were more evenly matched as the Sabres put nine on goal to the Muskies 11. Shortly after scoring the tying goal, Lakeland looked to go ahead, but Woldt made two key saves in the 87th and 88th minute to head into overtime.
The first overtime ended in a stalemate as neither team were able to get a shot off. Right out of the gates into the second overtime, however, the Sabres looked to end the season with a win, but Muskie keeper, Alex Piekarski, saved back-to-back shots as Zach Peltonen was unable to take advantage of the rebound off the header of Nate Peltonen.
Lakeland would have an offensive surge in the last three minutes, but Woldt came up big once again with two saves, resulting in the well-known tie.
The Sabres finish the season in eighth place, coming up shy to compete in the NAC Conference Tournament.
