Herrera goal lifts Marian men's soccer past MacMurray

Benjamin Fabian turns up the field with the ball.

FOND DU LAC - An early first half goal stood up for Marian University men's soccer (1-2-0, 0-0-0 NACC) as the Sabres defeated MacMurray for their first win of the season.

The Sabre offense finally found their rhythm on their home-field of Smith Field as they went on to outshoot the Highlanders 12-4 for the game.  Marian had an especially strong opening half where they recorded nine shots including what proved to be the only goal of the game from freshman Juan Herrera.

Senior Alexis Estela would chip the ball past the defense to earn an assist as Herrera was able to blast the ball off the goalie and into the goal for his first-career score.

Marian rode out that goal the remainder of the game behind strong defense that did not allow a single shot on goal the entire game.  The Sabre defense was also able to fend off three MacMurray corner kicks.

Herrera and fellow freshman Kylar Narance paced the Marian offense for the game with three shots apiece.  Senior Ian Chacon (1-1-0) earned the victory in goal for his 10th career shutout.

Marian closes out the weekend hosting Northland for a 1 p.m. kickoff from Smith Field tomorrow, Sunday, Sept. 9.
