Sabres Fall to Vikings in Season, Home Opener
FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – On a late-March day amidst the cold and snow, the Marian University men's tennis team opened up the season with a non-conference match against Lawrence University, competing in the great indoors of Center Court Tennis Club. The Vikings, competing in their 11th match of the season already, came away with the 9-0 victory over the Sabres.
Lawrence came out firing on all cylinders, taking all three doubles matches before cruising to singles wins in all six matches. With the win, the Vikings improved to 6-5 overall, while the Sabres dropped to 0-1 with the loss.
Ogden also competed at #1 singles. Three years removed from being named NAC Rookie of the Year, Ogden may need some time to get a feel for competitive tennis again, but he held his own against Lawrence's Cooper Smith, falling 6-3, 6-3.
Like Ogden, Elan Solvik is also a two-sport athlete for the Sabres and served as today's #2 singles player. The junior took one game from Zlevor before falling in straight sets.
At #5 singles, Sam Maetzold suffered an unfortunate injury, not believed to be serious, and was unable to continue.
All in all, the Sabres got their feet wet in the season opener and look forward to their next opponent, UW-Oshkosh. The Titans will come to town this Friday, March 29, in a 5 p.m. dual at Center Court Tennis Club in Fond du Lac.
