MILWAUKEE (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University men's tennis team dropped a trio of matches, including a pair to Wisconsin Lutheran College and MSOE on the opening day of Northern Athletics Conference action over the weekend.
The Sabres dropped all three match-ups by a final score of 9-0, but came close to garnering some points in a few instances. They opened up the weekend with a non-conference home defeat to WIAC foe, UW-Oshkosh (8-8). WLC (2-4, 1-0 NAC) came away with a victory at home Saturday morning and the Sabres struggled in their first outdoor match of the season in a loss to MSOE (2-8, 1-1 NAC) on the road in the afternoon.
In Friday's match against UW-Oshkosh, the Sabres hung tough in two doubles matches, but couldn't gain any momentum in any of their singles match-ups.
In the conference opener Saturday morning at the Princeton Club in New Berlin, the #1 doubles team of Rob Ogden and Andrew Bales took five games, from counterparts Lee Johnson and Ryan Sallmann of WLC, but the Warrior duo went on to win the match, 8-5.
The Warriors then blanked the Sabres in the final two doubles matches to build momentum towards sweeping all six singles match-ups. Elan Solvik took five games combined in a 6-2, 6-3 loss to Sallmann at #2 singles, while Jose Valencia took four games, falling 6-3, 6-1 to Luke Schroeder.
In the nightcap, the Sabres made the short trip to Milwaukee to take on the Raiders in their first outdoor match of the season. Marian played its best match of the season, taking a game in all but one of its nine matches.
The Sabres will be off until next weekend when they travel to River Forest, Ill. to take on Dominican and Concordia Chicago at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
