Sabre men's volleyball defeated by No. 2 Carthage

KENOSHA, Wis. - Marian University men's volleyball (5-11, 0-5 NACC) took the opening set against No. 2 Carthage but the Red Men rallied to take the next three sets to defeat the Sabres.

The Sabres trailed by as much as eight points in the opening set at 17-9 but were able to trim the deficit down to four at 23-19.  Senior Aaron Wendels then led the Sabres to a set win from the service line with a pair of aces to spark six unanswered points for a 25-23 win.

Carthage was able to hold off a Sabre rally in the second set winning 25-19 before a third set that was filled with offense.  Marian went on to hit .360 in the third set with 13 kills, while Carthage hit .481.  The Sabres led 16-11 in the set and brought that lead out to 20-16 before Carthage scored the next six points to take a 22-20 lead.  MU managed to tie the game at 22-22 but Carthage scored three of the next four points to take the 25-23 win.

The Red Men then used their momentum from the third set and cruised to a 25-12 match-clinching win.

Wendels went on to lead the Sabres with a team-high 14 kills and six digs.  Junior Ben Walter added nine kills with a .467 attack percentage to go with two solo blocks and an assisted block.  Fellow junior Cullen Liberski led the Sabre back row with nine digs.

Marian returns to NACC action traveling to Concordia Wisconsin Wednesday, Feb. 28 for a 7 p.m. first serve.
