MEQUON, Wis. - Marian University men's volleyball (6-11, 1-5 NACC) earned their first NACC win defeating Concordia Wisconsin with set finals of 25-15, 25-10 and 25-17.
The Sabre defense was stout all match long as the Falcons had a negative hitting percentage in all three sets closing out the match with a -.188 hitting percentage. The Marian offense, on the other hand, hit .241 for the match with 35 kills and had an especially strong second set hitting .294.
Marian led 14-12 in the opening set before a Sabre timeout sparked an 11-3 run to close out the set with five kills coming during the span. The second set saw the Sabres jump all over the Falcons early scoring 12 of the first 13 points with senior Aaron Wendels recording a pair of aces to cap off the fast start. Concordia Wisconsin rebounded to start the third set taking a 12-10 lead before the Sabres went on a 9-2 run to take a 19-14 lead and cruise to the sweep.
Wendels hit .500 for the match and recorded a match-high 12 kills to go with three service aces. Junior Jon Smallpage added eight kills, while sophomore Jacob DeGroot had six kills off of a .417 hitting percentage. In the back row, junior Cullen Liberski led the way with a match-high 10 digs.
Marian opens the weekend on the road against Lakeland Friday, March 2 with first serve at 7 p.m.
