Sabres Wrap Up Arizona Spring Trip

TUCSON, Ariz. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University softball team fell twice on the final day of its spring trip in Arizona, dropping contests of 5-3 and 7-3 to Alfred University and Baldwin Wallace College, respectively, this afternoon, March 14.

An early-inning hole proved too much to overcome in both instances as Alfred scored once in the first and twice in the second to build an insurmountable lead. Meanwhile, in game two, Baldwin Wallace used a four-run first inning en route to a victory.

Three Sabres recorded multiple hit games on the day with Emilie Jansen leading the way with a 3-for-7 combined effort, including a double and two runs scored. Gabby D'Oronzo tallied a pair of hits, three RBIs and a run scored, while Tana Vanden Heuvel also recorded two hits with two runs scored.

The Sabres dropped to 2-10 on the season with the losses and will return home Friday.

In game one, Baldwin added an unearned run in the first when the leadoff hitter, Arguello, reached due to a defensive miscue.

Two more runs were added in the second, capped with a pair of run scoring singles by Arguello and Torchia.

Trailing 3-0, the Sabres finally got in the runs column in the top of the third. Marian capitalized on a Saxon error as the pitcher failed to handle a chance right back to her and Vanden Heuvel reached. A stolen base and a single allowed her to get to third before Emily Gorges drove her home with a squib single in front of the plate.

After the Saxons made it 5-1, the Sabres threatened again in the top of the fifth. Two quick outs made it seem as if it was going to be a quick inning, but Jansen walked and D'Oronzo doubled her all the way home to make it 5-2. An error by the shortstop then allowed Gorges to reach and D'Oronzo also took advantage by coming home to score.

Momentum looked to be on the Sabres' side, but Alfred sent its closer, Muller, into the game to shut the door. She did just that by retiring seven of the eight batters she faced to earn her first save of the year.

In game two, Baldwin Wallace chased Marian starter, Brooke Koechell, with four runs in the first. The Sabres got one back in the top of the second when Nikki Ponticelli came around to score on Daniele Gerth's RBI single up the middle.

Gorges came on in relief and slowed the 'Jackets attack by throwing two straight scoreless innings. But in the fourth, the 'Jackets scored three more times to take a commanding 7-1 lead.

Marian scored twice in the top of the fifth as Vanden Heuvel and Jansen scored on D'Oronzo's two-run single to right center field to make the scored 7-3.

The Sabres mustered just one hit after that as BWC starter, Lauren Mims, went all seven innings en route to the win.

The Sabres will return home and hope that the snow melts in time for a non-conference road match-up against Ripon College on March 23.
