RIVER FOREST, Ill. (SabreAthletics.com) – With four Sabres scoring in double figures, the Marian University women's basketball team defeated Northern Athletics Conference opponent, Dominican University, 67-61, this afternoon, Dec. 1.
From the get-go, the Sabres never fell behind, going on an 11-1 run in the first four minutes of the first half. A momentary tie occurred at the 4:14 mark of the second half, but two free throws by Dani Huray put the Sabres back on top. Sarah Albert led all scorers with 19 points, while hitting three-of-five from behind the arc.
Marian improves to 2-3 overall, 1-2 in the NAC with the win, while Dominican drops to 0-6 (0-2 NAC) with the loss.
After falling behind by 10 in the first four minutes, the Stars clawed back with the scoring help of Allie Tapanes who tallied 10 of her 18 points in the first half, and rebounding efforts by Stacy Reynolds.
After cutting the lead to six, Dominican rebounded their way to a tie at 27-27 with second chance opportunities.
In the second half, Marian gained their biggest lead at the 15:23 mark by nine points when Albert hit another three-pointer. Stars' Tapanes and Laura Knieps helped their team get back to another tie at 51-apiece, but the Sabres would hit 8-of-10 free throws down the stretch to close out the game.
Freshman, Rissa Cerveny scored 17 points in 35 minutes, while Dani Huray registered her second double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 assists. Junior Ashley Backes helped the scoring effort with 11 points as well.
Marian has a short break until they host NAC opponent, MSOE, Tuesday, Dec. 4 inside Sadoff Gymnasium. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
