RIVER FOREST, Ill. -- The Dominican University Stars and Marian University Sabres joined forces on Saturday, Dec. 1, raising nearly $1,000 for Special Olympics Illinois. The Stars and Sabres sold special edition Special Olympics shirts in Dominican and Marian colors in the week leading up to the Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) doubleheader matchup between the universities men's and women's basketball teams on Saturday afternoon.
To culminate the effort, members of Special Olympics and their families took in the Stars' and Sabres' women's basketball game in River Forest, Ill., on Saturday afternoon. The honored guests enjoyed pizza with some Dominican University student-athletes prior to tipoff and then joined the teams on the floor for pregame introductions.
"It is really rewarding to see both institutions embrace the Division III spirit," commented Gabby Johnson, the Stars' first-year head coach. "Seeing the faces of the Special Olympians on the floor before the game was a moment the athletes from Dominican and Marian will cherish for the rest of their lives."
Dominican's Johnson and Marian's third-year Head Coach Bill Peters collaborated on the event, rounding up sponsorships from Eggers Imprints, Barnes & Thornburg, LLP and Corey Geiger and Krista Knigge of Hoard's Dairyman to provide each of the Special Olympians with a t-shirt from the event.
