MILWAUKEE - Marian University women's basketball (4-21, 3-17) was defeated by Alverno in their final game of the 2016-17 season by a final score of 74-62.

The Inferno jumped out with the early lead scoring nine of the first 11 points in the game.  The Sabres answered, however, using a 14-3 run to close out the quarter to take a 21-16 lead into the first break.  Junior Brandi Bender led the way in the quarter shooting 3-4 from the field for six points.

Marian managed to hold this lead for most of the second quarter bringing the game to a 37-29 Sabre lead with 3:29 left in the half.  Alverno responded as they were able to close out the quarter on a 10-2 run to send the two teams into the locker rooms tied at 39-39.

The third quarter proved to be all Alverno as they were able to shoot 8-14 (.571) from the field and outscore the Sabres 20-4.

The Sabres bounced back in the final quarter outscoring Alverno 19-15 but the deficit from the third quarter was too much to overcome with the final settling at 74-62.

Bender and senior Nicole Paulus each scored 15 points to lead the Sabre offense, while freshman Brianna Horton chipped in 14 points.
