Minneapolis, Minn. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University women's hockey team lose a tight match, 3-2 while visiting the Auggies of Augsburg College, this evening, Nov. 2.
Sabre, Amanda Waigand led the Sabres in all scoring netting both goals. Waigand would knot the game up in the second period, 2-2, but the Sabres couldn't stop Auggie, Erica Berthold from scoring the game winner at the 10:11 mark in the second period.
Augsburg improved to 1-2-0 on the season with the win, while Marian fell to 0-2-0 with the loss.
Waigand would give the Sabres an early lead in the match as she netted a goal in the 4:16 mark of the first period. However, there was no freight in the Auggies with the early Sabre, offensive surge, as Kayla Fuechtmann would score four minutes later at the 8:05 mark to tie the match. Sara Rajewsky, assisted by Kayla Fuechtmann, would then give them the lead scoring at the 17:01 mark of the first period.
Working her magic, Waigand would knot the game up at 2-2 scoring at the 4:21 mark of the second period. Auggies would return the favor, as Erica Berthold, assisted by Jessica Larkin and Casey Miller, would give Augsburg the lead for good. Marian would have their scoring chances later that period, but were unable to take advantage of two power plays, getting off only four shots in the two power play opportunities.
Sabre goal keeper, Ali Glazer kept busy on the night handling 31 shots in the match. Marian kept pace with Augsburg, however, as Auggie goal keeper, Brianna Shulz faced 27 shots. When needed most, the Sabres, however, were only able to get off four shots in the third period compared to the Auggies 15.
The Sabres take ice again tomorrow, Nov. 3 to complete the road trip vs. Augsburg. Game time is slated for 2:00 p.m.
