FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University women's hockey team dropped a 3-2 decision against NCHA opponent UW-Eau Claire in the first of the two-game series this evening, Dec. 8 at Blueline Family Ice Center during Marian's Sixth Annual Pink Out Event.
The Sabres and Blugolds exchanged goals throughout the match, but the Blugolds came out on the winning end. All of Marian's offense came in the second period from Kristin Skubic and Megan Sesing-Gomoll, but it was Blugolds' Amanda Kane who earned the game winner.
UW-Eau Claire improved to 4-5-2 overall and 4-3-2 in NCHA play, while Marian dropped to 3-5-2 (2-3-2 NCHA).
Despite being out shot 35-16 in the game, the Sabres kept the game within reach throughout the match. When needed most, the Sabres were only able to get off three shots for the entire third period.
Ashley Baugher, assisted by Taylor Bowker got the Blugolds on board first, scoring at 9:17 mark of the first period. Baugher committed a hooking penalty at the 14:32 mark giving the Sabres a scoring opportunity, but were unable to get off a single shot during the two minute minor.
The Sabres came to life when Kristin Skubic found the back of the net, assisted by Rachel Mullendore, on a power-play opportunity to tie the game up early in the second period at the 4:25 mark. Five minutes later, Blugold, Sam Knutson scored at the 9:51 mark while taking advantage of a power-play opportunity of their own. Megan Sesing-Gomoll tied the game back up, scoring single-handedly at the 17:24 mark.
Going in tied, 2-2 into the third period, Eau Claire the scoring frenzy as Amanda Kane netted a goal early at the 1:35 mark. Two power-play opportunities were awarded to Marian, but Marian was unable to make anything happen and take advantage of the man advantage.
Game two against Eau Claire of the two game series begins tomorrow, Dec. 9. Puck is set to drop at 2:00 p.m.
