FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) - Hoping to turn the tides from the previous weekend, Marian returned to the Blue Line for their only game of the weekend on Saturday, Feb. 1 against St. Norbert.
The Green Knights were the victors last weekend, taking Friday night's game 4-2 and Saturday's game 4-0. They entered the weekend on a nine-game unbeaten streak and in search of a season sweep of their neighbors to the south.
Marian had plans of their own and came out strong in the first period, ripping off nine shots to St. Norbert's five. Both goaltenders were spot on, however, and kept the game at a scoreless tie after 20 minutes of play.
With senior Erin Dunphy in the penalty box for hooking, St. Norbert went to work on the man-advantage and capitalized just 19 seconds in. Stepahnie Slinde scored her eighth goal of the season on assists from Laurel Hill and Myranda Hayes giving the Green Knights their first lead of the night.
Marian refused to let the goal put them away and came back with one of their own just minutes later when senior Amanda Reimann put home a rebound off the pads of Kaley Gibson. The St. Norbert netminder made the initial save off of freshman Allyson Zachwieja's shot only to have Reimann score her first goal of the season.
Before the fans could settle into their seats for the third period, St. Norbert's Laurel Hill tallied 15 seconds into the final frame to give the Green Knights the 2-1 lead. A goal at 6:59 by Zoe Kurth would prove to be the nail in the coffin as St. Norbert completed the three-game sweep of Marian, winning 3-1.
The Sabres fall to 4-13-1 overall and 3-9-0 in the NCHA. They'll become road warriors next weekend as they travel to Hancock, Mich. on Friday to play Finlandia before making the trek over to Duluth, Minn. to square off against St. Scholastica.
