FOND DU LAC, Wis. (Sabrethletics.com) – The Marian University women's soccer team pulled out some first half heroics to tie the game at 2-2, but an early second half goal by Edgewood College proved too much to overcome in a hotly-contested Northern Athletics Conference match at Smith Fields this evening, Sept. 25.
Trailing 2-0 late in the first half, Laura Maly put the Sabres on the board in the 35th minute with an assist by Leisa Conn. Then, with seconds remaining in the first half, Kylie McArthur crossed a ball into the box and Conn was there to put it away as the buzzer sounded.
It gave the Sabres momentum into the second half, but they weren't able to take advantage as Edgewood's Jennifer Dailey scored the game-winner, and her second goal of the match, in the 55th minute.
Marian falls to 3-5 overall, 3-2 in the NAC, while Edgewood improved to 8-2 (3-1 NAC).
Edgewood took a first half lead on Elaine Gerry's league-leading 15th goal of the season in the 33rd minute. Just a minute and 10 seconds later, Dailey recorded her first goal of the game, and quickly, the Eagles had a big advantage.
Less than a minute later, Maly cut the deficit in half before Conn found the equalizer at the horn.
In the second half, Dailey struck again with her seventh goal and first game-winner of the year. Marian was held to just two shots after halftime and was outshot 14-10 in the match.
Marian will host Dominican University this Saturday, Sept. 29, at Smith Fields. Game time is slated for noon.
