FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – A late goal in the 84th minute nipped the Marian University women's soccer team, losing 1-0 in a non-conference match up against UW-Stevens Point at Smith Fields this afternoon, Oct. 7.
The Pointer offense dominated much of the match as they were able to get off 16 shots, but only three were on goal as the Sabre defense stood tall. All three shots that Marian took were on goal, but none were able to get past UWSP keeper, Mary Burch, during their limited time of possession.
Marian drops to 5-6 overall with the loss, while Stevens Point improves to 9-3 with the win.
With the game knotted at zero, the Sabres were only six minutes away from heading into overtime before Pointer, Angela Gallow, netted her ninth goal of the season in the upper right corner of the net in the 85th minute of the match. Sabre keeper, Caitlyn Rosenberger aggressively went to recover a ball in the goalie's box, but Gallow beat her to it, leaving an open net for the goal.
Two of the three shots on goal came in the second half as the Sabres tried to get on the board early in the second half, shooting in the 51st and 67th minutes of the game. Thereafter, Marian was unable to get anything together offensively.
The Sabres continue their non-conference play on Wednesday, Oct. 10, as they visit 24th ranked UW-Oshkosh at Titan Stadium. Game time is slated for 4 p.m.
