MILWAUKEE, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – Four first-half goals highlighted a dominating, 7-2, road victory over Alverno College and secured home-field advantage in the first round of the Northern Athletics Conference tournament for the Marian University women's soccer team, this afternoon, Oct. 20.
Leisa Conn and Morgan Ansems recorded multi-goal games, each putting home two scores on the Inferno. Kylie McArthur, Laura Maly and Sam Austin also found the scoring column as Marian controlled the match from start to finish.
Marian improves to 8-8 overall, 8-3 in the NAC with the win, while Alverno falls to 5-12 (1-10 NAC) with the loss.
McArthur got the scoring off on the right foot, literally, with a 15-yard strike from Jenny Brandt in the 13th minute. Less than four minutes later, Conn converted her first score of the game on an assist from Maly. Ansems then made it 3-0 with an unassisted tally in the 30th minute before Conn scored her fifth of the season and second of the game on an assist from Courtney Schmuhl in the 37th minute.
With a 4-0 lead out of the break, Ansems added her second of the game and fifth of the season in the 55th minute with Kayla Bernardi getting credit with the assist.
Alverno finally got on the board in the 76th minute on Amber Thomas' second goal of the year. The Inferno would strike again, but not before Maly got into the scoring column with her team-leading sixth of the year in the 77th minute. In the 78th minute, Nava Moniriarani scored her team-leading 11th of the season.
Austin would provide the final tally in the blowout win, burying a shot that was setup by Maly and Conn to make it 7-2.
The Sabres will host the first round of the NAC tournament next Saturday, Oct. 27, but first close out the regular season at home with Maranatha and UW-La Crosse, Tues.-Wed., Oct. 23-24.
