FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – An early goal ignited the Marian University women's soccer team to a quick lead, but the visiting UW-La Crosse Eagles had an answer down the stretch and both teams played to a 1-1 draw in the regular season finale and Senior Day at Smith Fields, this evening, Oct. 24.
Laura Maly delivered her ninth goal of the season in the third minute off well-placed cross by Kylie McArthur. The Eagles would threaten often, but couldn't crack the scoring column until the 77th minute when Saskia Taylor put one home off a corner kick service from Megan Gresl. Both squads squandered chances in the overtime sessions and the match finished in a draw, the Sabres' first this season.
Marian moves its mark to 9-8-1 overall, while UW-La Crosse finishes at 5-7-4.
The Sabre goal that came in the third minute was off a great build up on the left side of the field. McArthur took the ball and delivered a beautiful cross inside the six-yard box that Maly headed into the right side of the net.
The equalizer for the Eagles came on one of their 11 corner kicks of the match. Gresl lofted one inside the six-yard box and Taylor was there to put a head on it for the goal.
The Sabres will continue their busy week, transitioning into the postseason with a Northern Athletics Conference Tournament first round match-up against fifth-seed MSOE. Marian earned the #4 seed and will host at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
