Sabre women's soccer clinches postseason berth versus Alverno

Alicia Balken narrowly keeps the ball in.

MILWAUKEE - After a two-year absence from the NACC Tournament, Marian University women's soccer (9-8-0, 5-4-0 NACC) clinched a postseason berth with a 3-1 win over Alverno.

The Sabre offense took over in the match outshooting the Inferno 34-3 with 19 shots in the first half and 15 in the second half.  Junior Alexis Peterson continued her hot streak with her sixth goal of the season at the 12 minute mark.  Senior Jessica Retzlaff played the ball into the box to Peterson for the assist.

MU added to their lead just 44-seconds into the second half when freshman Alicia Balken snuck a shot inside the right post for her fifth goal of the year.  The Inferno cut the deficit in half 37-seconds later but Marian found the back of the net off a corner kick in the 60th minute.  Junior Reilly Louko was credited with the goal after junior Karissa Preston sent the corner into the box and Alverno was unable to clear the ball.

Junior Danielle Deltgen improved to 7-4-0 on the year in goal making one save.  Louko had a game-high seven shots, while Balken had a game-high four shots on frame.

Marian closes out the regular season Wednesday, Oct. 25 when they host Edgewood at 7 p.m. from Smith Field.  The Sabres will either be the No. 5 or No. 6 seed for the NACC Tournament and will need to travel for the opening round Sunday, Oct. 29 with the opponent pending the result of the regular season finale.
