Women's Tennis Picked Fifth in Preseason Coaches' Poll
WAUKESHA, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University women's tennis team was picked to finish fifth in the Northern Athletics Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll, released by the conference office Monday, August 27. Defending regular season champion, Wisconsin Lutheran, garnered nine of the 12 first-place votes and was tabbed to repeat as conference champions in 2012.
Head Coach John Frausto's squad returns five letterwinners from the 2011 squad, which qualified for the sixth and final spot in the team tournament with an overall record of 9-7, 5-6 in the NAC.
Wisconsin Lutheran's nine first-place votes gave them 141 voting points, 12 ahead of Edgewood, which received two first-place votes. Concordia Wisconsin tallied the final first-place vote and was picked third with 126 points. Dominican (104), Marian (82) and MSOE (75) round out the top-six.
Meanwhile, Benedictine (69), Aurora (63), Alverno (57), Concordia Chicago (39), Lakeland (39) and Rockford (12) round out the rest of the field.
A single-round robin schedule is conducted this fall to determine the league's regular season champion and the qualifiers for the conference tournament in the spring. The six-team conference tournament will take place April 29-May 3, and the champion will receive the NAC's automatic bid to the 2013 NCAA Championship Tournament.
