FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University women's tennis team swept a pair of match-up, defeating Northern Athletics Conference foe MSOE, 9-0, before dispatching non-conference opponent, Mount Mary College, 9-0, today, Sept. 22.
The Sabres did not drop a single match and only saw one singles match that went more than two sets. In the process, Marian improved its record to 7-7 overall, 6-4 in the NAC, while MSOE dropped to 1-7 (1-7 NAC) and Mount Mary to 0-7 overall.
Goyke's #1 singles match was by far the most challenging of any Marian player on the day as MSOE's Marli Trier won the second set to force a third-set tie-breaker. But Goyke responded with a, 7-4, third-set victory to win the match.
Another notable match included Chelsey Will's #4 singles match proved difficult, at least in the first set, as she needed a tie-breaker to settle the initial exchange. Will won the first set by a score of 7-6 after a tie-breaker in which she dominated, 7-0. She breezed to a 6-2 second set win on the way to a match sweep.
Against Mount Mary, Will and Brooker survived 7-5 second set wins on the way to singles match-up sweeps, while Rachell Stoffel and Karianne Hofstetter both picked up victories at #5 and #6 singles, respectively.
In doubles, Stoffel and Hoffstetter outlasted the #3 doubles combo of Katie Wolk and Krista Olson to win 8-6.
The Sabres will be back in action tomorrow afternoon to take on Roosevelt at 1 p.m. in Chicago. The regular season finale will take place Tuesday, Sept. 25, as Marian hosts Alverno on what will be Senior Day, beginning at 4 p.m. at Buttermilk Creek Park.
