CHICAGO (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University women's tennis team escaped the Windy City with a 5-4 victory over Roosevelt University in non-conference action this afternoon, Sept. 23.
The difference in the match was an 8-6 tie-break that resulted in a 9-8 win for the #1 singles team of Ann Goyke and Brynn Hartzell. The Sabres dropped the other two doubles matches before recovering to take four singles decisions en route to the 5-4 team victory.
MU improved to 8-7 overall, while Roosevelt fell to 0-2.
Goyke and Hartzell fought off a single match point to force the tie-breaker against their counterparts, Danielle Smith and Valerie Vasquez. The Marian tandem then won the tie-breaker 8-6.
Goyke suffered a tough loss at #1 singles later on, falling to Carina Balan of Roosevelt in a third set tie-break, 10-6, after winning a second set tie-break 7-6 (7-2).
Reilly Connaher and Hartzell cruised to victories at #2 and #3 singles, respectively. Sarah Brooker took the first set, 7-5, at #5 singles before handling Feven Haile, 6-1, in the second set. Rachell Stoffel then overcame her opponent at #6 singles, 6-4, 6-3.
The Sabres will wrap up the regular season this Tuesday, Sept. 25, as they take on visiting Alverno College at Buttermilk Creek Park at 4 p.m. It will be Senior Day for Marian's Brooker, Connaher and Stoffel.
