FOND DU LAC, Wis. - After making a return to the NACC Tournament semifinals, the Marian University women's tennis will have high expectations for the 2017 season.
"Our entire team is excited for the beginningof the 2017 season," commented head women's tennis coach Marcus Wiegert. "We bring back all eight returners and have four recruits that will join the mix. The schedule is challenging and we start off with competitive conference matches right off the bat."
Marian opens the season in NACC play Saturday, Sept. 2 against of pair of opponents who qualified for the NACC Tournament in Edgewood and Alverno in Milwaukee. The Sabres then play their home opener against Wisconsin Lutheran Wednesday, Sept. 6 at 4 p.m. in NACC action. The Warriors and Sabres are currently even in the all-time series with each team winning 13 matches each.
The Sabres open a four-match road trip at UW-Oshkosh Thursday, Sept. 7 before returning to NACC play where they face Aurora and Dominican on the road Saturday, Sept. 9. MU closes out the road streak at Beloit Monday, Sept. 11.
Marian returns home for four home matches opening against Lakeland and 2016 NACC Champion Concordia Wisconsin Saturday, Sept. 16. Marian opens the dual meet against the Muskies at 10 a.m. before the CUW visits Buttermilk Creek Park at 2 p.m. A non-conference match against Carroll the following day at 10 a.m. closes out the weekend.
MU then hosts MSOE Wednesday, Sept. 20 for a 4 p.m. match before four non-conference matches. The Sabres hold a 19-5 record in the all-time series against the Raiders and have won the past two meetings.
A road trip to Lawrence opens the non-conference stretch before the Sabres host Purdue Northwest and Ripon Saturday, Sept. 23 at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., respectively. Marian will look to even the all-time series against the Red Hawks as MU is 5-6 against Ripon but have won the past three meetings. The matchup against the Pride will be the first between the two programs.
Marian closes out the fall portion of the schedule at UW-Stevens Point Wednesday, Oct. 4 before closing out NACC action at Concordia Chicago Saturday, Oct. 7. Marian is 8-6 all-time against the Cougars and have won the past two meetings.
