Sabre tennis drops heartbreaker to WLC

FOND DU LAC, Wis. - Marian University women's tennis (3-3, 2-2 NACC) dropped a heartbreaker to Wisconsin Lutheran in NACC action by a 5-4 final.

The Warriors opened with the lead after taking No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, but the No. 2 Marian doubles duo of junior Celeste Degeneffe and freshman Kyrsten Bruce were able to win 8-4 to put MU on the board.

The Sabres would then take No. 3, 4 and 6 in singles action to put the score at 4-4, while No. 1 singles action went into a third set tiebreak.  Bruce completed a sweep of the day at No. 3 winning the first and third sets by a 7-5 tally.  Freshman Emma Lewandowski and junior Andrea Krahenbuhl swept their matches at No. 4 and No. 6, respectively.  Junior Meg Hartzell was able to force a third set at No. 1 singles after dropping the opener 7-5.  Hartzell was in a dead lock with Paige Potaracke and the two needed a tiebreaker to decide the winner.  In the end, Potaracke came away with the thrilling win after taking the tiebreak 10-8.

Marian is next in action Saturday, Sept. 16 when they host Lakeland at 10 a.m. and CUW at 2 p.m. at Buttermilk Creek Park.
