Marian women's tennis opens season with sweep of Lawrence

FOND DU LAC - Marian University women's tennis (1-0, 0-0 NACC) opened the 2018-19 season with a convincing 9-0 sweep of Lawrence.

In the doubles sweep, Meg Hartzell and Brenda Ordonez had the most convincing win at the second flight winning 8-1.  Celeste Degeneffe and Erica Counter earned an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles, while Emma Lewandowski and Mackenzie Meyers battled back at the top-flight to win 8-5.

Kyrsten Bruce and Kristin Houle would win their singles matches, while the other four flights consisted of doubles players earning sweeps for the day.  Bruce took the No. 3 flight with a 6-3 and 6-2 victory, while Houle won No. 6 6-1, 6-1.

At the top-flight, Hartzell led throughout and earned a 6-3, 6-4 win, while Lewandowski had a similar 6-4, 6-2 victory at the No. 2 flight.  Meyers opened her No. 4 flight win with a 6-3 victory before a 6-0 sweep in the second set and Degeneffe battled to a 7-5 win in the first set of the No. 5 flight before an easy 6-1 win in the second.

The win marked only the fourth time in program history the Sabres have defeated Lawrence but was also the second consecutive year Marian beat the Vikings.

Marian travels to UW-Oshkosh Thursday, Sept. 6 for a 4 p.m. road non-conference match.
