RIPON, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – The Marian University women's volleyball team swept a triangular by winning both matches in four sets against host Ripon College and Mount Mary College. The Sabres improve to 4-2 on the season and will head to Chicago this weekend for the Viking Clash Volleyball Tournament hosted by North Park University.
Marian showed resilience in a tight non-conference match against Ripon. After dropping the first set, 25-21, the Sabres came back to win the next three (25-23, 25-20, 25-21) to take the match. Not a single Sabre broke double figures in kills, but it was a balanced effort as five had six or more kills, led by Carlie Kinsey's nine. Casey Lamberty added eight kills, while Katlin Jarvis chipped in seven.
Katie Reimer dished out 32 assists and added 12 digs for a double-double. Ashley Zumbrock turned in a match-high 25 digs. Katrina Jansen added 14, while Kinsey and Lamberty had 12 and 10, respectively.
In the second match, the Sabres used their momentum in taking down Ripon to dispatch Mt. Mary in relatively quick fashion, going away 25-18, 25-13, 23-25, 25-21. Reimer recorded another double-double with 29 assists and 13 digs, while Anna Smit turned in a team-high 12 kills on a .370 hitting percentage.
Marian hit .126 as a team and held Mt. Mary to just and .026 average, forcing 37 errors in the process.
The Sabres will now prepare for the Viking Clash at North Park University this weekend where they will take on Alverno, Benedictine, MIT and host North Park. Marian's first match will take place at 4 p.m. Friday against Alverno.
