Sabres Sizzle Inferno in Straight Sets
FOND DU LAC, Wis. (SabreAthletics.com) – An overwhelming effort by the Marian University women's volleyball team resulted in a straight sets victory over the visiting Alverno College Inferno (25-17, 25-12, 25-20) in Northern Athletics Conference play inside Sadoff Gymnasium this evening, Oct. 2.
The Sabres hit a season-high .354 for the match, totaling 37 kills against just eight errors on 82 attempts. Carlie Kinsey led the Marian attack with 11 kills on 18 attempts. Katie Reimer had a match-high 23 assists, while Janessa Magdefrau recorded a team-high eight digs for the Sabres.
Marian improved to 12-9 overall, 4-2 in the NAC, while Alverno fell to 3-15 (0-6 NAC).
The Sabres held Alverno to .000 hitting in the first set. The Inferno converted 11 attacks, but also committed 11 errors, while the Sabres weren't much better, compiling just a .160 hitting percentage en route to the 25-17 set win.
In the second set, the Sabres turned it on, hitting .517 and recording 16 kills to just one error. Marian jumped out to 6-1 lead before Alverno was forced to call a timeout. It didn't slow matters as the Sabres pushed the advantage to 20-8 before running away with a 25-12 win.
Every Sabre saw action by the third set, one that was made close by a persistent Alverno squad driven to extend the match to a fourth set, but to no avail. Eight Sabres hit over .333 for the match, led by Dana Scheller's two kills on three attacks, including the dagger to score a 25-20 third set victory and match win.
The Marian defense was stout in the win as well, recording eight blocks to just one for Alverno. Aileen Maier had five blocks for the Sabres, including three solo, while Katlin Jarvis added three assisted blocks.
Marian will be back in action this weekend, hosting Concordia Chicago at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 5, and Dominican at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 6.
