MEQUON, Wis. - Marian University cross country traveled to Concordia Wisconsin to open the 2018 season at the Ken Weidt Classic.
The day was highlighted by a strong season-opening run from Alyssa Zuhlke who crossed the line in 28:51.6 to put her in 14th out of the 72-runner field.
Kayla Gregar was next in for the Sabres with a strong 35th place finish after crossing the line at the 30:46.2 mark. Newcomer Breena Gaskov and Sydney Lukes, who missed last season to injury, finished neck-and-neck with Gaskov taking 57th at 34:27.0 and Lukes one spot behind her at 35:31.9.
Ripon took the top three spots individually led by Madison King who finished in 25:59.1 to take the individual title. The Red Hawks finished with a team score of 43 to take the team title.
Jacob Leiden paced the Sabres on the men's side finishing in 21st with a time of 31:45.9. Austin Connelly finished in 30th place in his first-career run timing in at 35:15.6, while Jarod Silhavy timed in at 42:22.9 to finish in 44th.
The Ripon men finished with a team score of 21 to secure the team sweep of the event with Wesley Schiek of the host Concordia Wisconsin taking the individual title with a time of 28:39.6.
Marian is next in action in West Allis, Wis. when the Sabres travel to the Warrior Invitational Saturday, Sept. 29 at Greenfield Park.
