FOND DU LAC, Wis. - Marian University men's hockey (0-1-0, 0-1-0 NCHA) opened the season at home hosting No. 6 St. Norbert. The Green Knights scored a pair of goals late in the first and third periods to earn a 4-1 road victory.
The start of the game was sloppy with two penalties each side, but neither squad was able to get on the scoreboard. SNC used the momentum from their second power play to score a pair of goals shortly after, separated by 1:04, late in the period to take the first lead of the game.
After a quiet second period and beginning to the third period, Ben Morgan cut the Sabre deficit in half with a wrister from the left circle. Hunter Stewart and Devin Stuermer earned assists on the goal for their first points of the season that put the score at 2-1 with only 4:20 left to play.
St. Norbert answered with a goal from Steven Phillips 1:18 later and clinched the game with an empty net goal inside the final minute.
Marian was outshot 32-15 over the game with Jacob Ryd and Morgan leading the team with three shots apiece.
Mike Baldwin was strong in net for MU turning away 28 of the 31 shots sent his way.
The Sabres head to St. Norbert to conclude the series tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 31 with a 7 p.m. puck drop.
