SUPERIOR, Wis. - The Marian University men's hockey team (2-3-3, 2-3-1 NCHA) held a late 1-0 lead against UW-Superior but the YellowJackets knotted the game up at 1-1 to force overtime and ultimately a tie.
In the opening period neither team could find the back of the net but the Sabres dominated possession of the puck and outshot the YellowJackets 10-2 in the period.
The Sabres then opened up the scoring at the 7:51 mark when confusion behind the YellowJacket goal gave Thomas Fazio a wide open net to bury his first career goal from the right circle. Warren Carter and Derek Thorogood earned assists on the play to give Marian a 1-0 lead. Then in the final minute of the period Thorogood would find the post in 4-on-4 action, but MU would have to settle for the one goal period.
Marian was outshot 13-7 in the period despite holding the lead heading into the second intermission.
UWS then came out in the third period and were able to tie the game with 4:23 left in regulation to force the extra period. The YellowJackets managed to outshoot the Sabres 11-3 with MU able to rebound in overtime with a 3-1 shots advantage, but neither team could light the lamp leading to the tie.
Mike Baldwin stood on his head once again stopping 26 of the 27 shots sent his way with 23 of his saves coming in the second and third period.
Marian returns home next weekend for the Thanksgiving Showdown where the Sabres will face St. Olaf Friday, Nov. 27 at approximately 7:30 p.m. and UW-Eau Claire Saturday, Nov. 28 at 8 p.m.
