FOND DU LAC, Wis. - Marian University men's hockey (8-5-3, 6-4-1 NCHA) moved into second place of the NCHA South with a 4-1 victory over CUW at home.
The Falcons opened the scoring but a mere 1:14 later the Sabres knotted the score at one apiece with an unassisted score from Travis Meyer. Meyer beat the glove of the CUW goalie from the left circle for his first career goal.
The Sabres would go on the power play for the first time of the game with just over 2 seconds remaining in the period and looked poised to open the second period with the man advantage but a goal from Gianni Mangone at the buzzer put Marian up 2-1 heading into the first intermission. Mangone beat the glove from the right circle and was assisted by Derek Thorogood and Hunter Stewart in an opening period where MU outshot CUW 15-4.
Mangone would net his second goal of the game on the power play at the 7:55 mark of the second period after finding a wide open net from the right circle with assists to Thorogood and Scott Milnthorp. The blue liner then completed his hat trick with just under two minutes remaining in the period on a break away with an assist to James Mathias. The hat trick goal ended up being the final goal in a 4-1 final and was Mangone's seventh goal of the year.
The MU defenese played especially well holding CUW to a combined nine shots between the first two periods and scoreless on four power play opportunities. The Sabres finished the game with a 31-18 shots advantage.
Mike Baldwin improved to 6-2-3 on the year in goal making 17 saves with his lone blemish coming in the first period.
Marian looks for their second consecutive sweep traveling to CUW tomorrow, Saturday, Jan. 16 for a 7 p.m. puck drop.
