MEQUON, Wis. - The Marian University men's hockey team (9-5-3, 7-4-1 NCHA) earned their second consecutive sweep behind Devin Stuermer's fourth multi-goal game in a 4-1 win at CUW.
Similarly to the opener, CUW managed to get on the board first after scoring a power play goal at the 17:58 mark of the first period for the early 1-0 lead.
The Sabres would hold a 12-7 lead in shots on goal in the opening period and needed only 25 seconds to tie the game early in the second with a Stuermer power play goal. Stuermer benefited from a scrum in front of the net for his eighth goal of the year. Then 59 seconds later the Sabres took their first lead of the game behind James Mathias' third goal of the year with assists to Brodie Jamieson and Scott Milnthorp.
The Falcons answered, however, with a goal at the 4:48 mark to bring the score to a 2-2 tie. The Sabre penalty kill would spend plenty of time on the ice following the goal but were able to fight off a five minute major to keep the score knotted headed into the third period.
Nick Monfils would put the Sabres ahead for good with a power play goal from the left circle for his second goal of the year. Jamieson and Gianni Mangone assisted the goal that came at the 7:43 mark. Stuermer then sealed the win with a goal in the final two minutes with an assist to Mike Zajac to set the final at 4-2.
The Sabres finished the game with a 36-28 shots advantage with Mike Baldwin earning the win in goal for the Sabres making 26 saves.
Marian returns to the ice Friday, Jan. 22 as they open a home-and-home series against Lake Forest at Blue Line with a 7 p.m. puck drop.
