FOND DU LAC, Wis. - The No. 15 Marian University men's hockey team (10-5-3, 8-4-1 NCHA) out shot Lake Forest 40-16 and used a three goal second period to defeat the Foresters 5-2 in the series opener at Blue Line.
Devin Stuermer opened the scoring for the game midway through the first period after receiving a pass from behind the net and burying the puck from the right circle. Hunter Stewart and Derek Thorogood assisted the goal which was Stuermer's 10th on the season.
A little over six minutes later, Curtis Lewington was turned away on his initial shot but took his own rebound and lit the lamp for the first time in his career to extend the MU lead to 2-0. Stewart and Thorogood once again assisted the goal to cap off a period where the Sabres out shot Lake Forest 17-4.
The Foresters opened the second period cutting the lead in half, but a pair of Marian power play goals would push the Sabre lead out to 4-1. Thorogood scored the first man-advantage goal with assists to Scott Milnthorp and Stewart for his sixth goal of the year, while Nick Monfils lit the lamp for the third time of the year for the second power play goal with assists from Thorogood, his fourth point of the game, and Milnthorp.
The Sabres would be held scoreless in the third period with Lake Forest adding a goal in the final minute of the third period to set the final at 5-2.
Mike Baldwin improved to 8-2-3 on the year making 14 saves, while holding Lake Forest 0-3 on the power play.
Marian concludes the series tomorrow, Saturday, Jan. 23, in Lake Forest, Ill. for a 7 p.m. puck drop.
