FOND DU LAC, Wis. - No. 13 Marian University men's hockey (12-5-3, 10-4-1 NCHA) defeated No. 14 MSOE with a 4-1 final to earn the program's 300th win and push their winning streak to seven games, third longest streak in the nation, along with clinching a berth in the NCHA Tournament.
The Sabres opened the scoring 2:49 into the game with Gianni Mangone beating the MSOE goalie from the right circle for his ninth goal of the season. Hunter Stewart and Cole McCaig assisted the goal that gave MU an early lead over the ranked Raiders.
Travis Meyer was next to light the lamp for the Sabres with just over nine minutes remaining in the first period with assists from James Mathias and Brodie Jamieson. The goal was Meyer's second of the season and highlighted a period where MU outshot MSOE 10-4.
The second period produced a clean sheet with the third period seeing three goals in a span of 1:47. Cole McCaig scored his first career goal at the 6:51 mark of the third period sneaking the puck past the goalie from the left circle with assists to Mangone and Tanner Pagendam. MSOE answered finding the back of the net for the first time in the game 12 seconds later to put the score at 3-1. Mathias then found the back of the net 1:35 later for his fourth goal of the year to re-extend the lead to 4-1 with assists to Meyer and Jamieson.
Marian finished the game with a 30-16 shots advantage, while also holding the Raiders 0-4 on power play opportunities.
Marian concludes the series with MSOE at the Kern Center in Milwaukee tomorrow, Saturday, Jan. 30 at 4 p.m.
