MILWAUKEE - Marian men's hockey (13-5-3, 11-4-1 NCHA) completed their fourth consecutive sweep with a 4-1 road win at MSOE behind a strong defensive performance and a second period hat trick from Devin Stuermer.
The first period led to a clean scoresheet despite Marian outshooting the Raiders by a 13-4 margin. The Sabres were able to take advantage of opportunities in the second period as they would light the lamp four times.
Stuermer started the scoring when he tipped a puck in front of the net at the 3:40 mark on the power play with assists to Brodie Jamieson and Scott Milnthorp. Stuermer then gave the Sabres a two goal advantage when he skated from the right circle into the slot and fired a shot past the glove of the MSOE goalie at the 7:36 mark with assists to Derek Thorogood and Hunter Stewart.
Curtis Lewington nearly made the advantage three goals but could only find the post. Derek Perl beat the glove shortly after the near goal in the final two minutes of the period to give Marian a 3-0 lead for his second goal of the season, assists to Gianni Mangone and Stuermer. A mere 49 seconds later Stuermer completed the second period hat trick for his fourth point of the period with assists to his linemates Thorogood and Stewart.
The Sabre defense continued to limit Raider shots with MU holding a 13-6 shots advantage in the strong second period.
MSOE managed to get on the board in the third period on a breakaway following a turnover in the neutral zone, but it would be the final goal to conclude the scoring at 4-1.
Mike Baldwin improved to 10-2-3 on the year with 16 saves on the day. MU finished with a 38-17 shots advantage led by Perl who had a game-high seven shots.
Marian will next hit the road for a two game set at Finlandia Feb. 5-6.
