Sabres place four on NCHA all-conference lists

WAUKESHA, Wis. - After putting together a 17-5-3 record with a 15-4-1 conference ledger, the Marian men's hockey team placed four student-athletes on all-conference lists announced the NCHA league offices Tuesday.

Erik Cooper was voted the NCHA Player of the Year after a 28-point season (11-17--28) and leading St. Norbert to a share of the NCHA regular season title with a 17-2-1 conference record.  Connor Armour was named the Freshman of the Year after leading the NCHA with 37 points (7-30--37) and guiding Adrian to the other share of the NCHA regular season title.

The Sabres were able to place Derek Thorogood, Gianni Mangone, and Mike Baldwin on the All-NCHA team, while Mangone and fellow rookie Jake Howie were named to the All-Freshman team.

All-NCHA:

Mike Baldwin (Junior, G, Waukesha, Wis.) - Mike Baldwin had one of the best regular seasons not only in the NCHA but the entire country to earn a spot on the All-NCHA team.  Baldwin ranks third in the nation with a 1.45 goals-against average and ranked at the top of the NCHA with 10 conference wins and second in the conference with a .938 save percentage.  The junior net minder posted three shutouts on the season and was named NCHA Defensive Player of the Week three times.

Derek Thorogood (Sophomore, F, Calgary, Alta.) - Derek Thorogood built upon a successful freshman campaign and led the Sabres in points (9-24--33) this season to earn All-NCHA accolades.  Thorogood had a 12-game point streak in the season and was named NCHA Offensive Player of the Week along with earning a spot on the D3Hockey.com Team of the Week after a five-point weekend against Lake Forest.  Thorogood currently ranks 15th in the nation with a 1.32 points per game average and eighth in the country with 0.96 assists per game.

 

All-NCHA/All-Freshman:

Gianni Mangone (Freshman, D, Calgary, Alta.) - Gianni Mangone ranked as one of the best blue liners in the nation in his first NCAA season to earn a spot on both the All-NCHA and All-Freshman teams.  Mangone (9-9--18) ranked third in the NCHA for points and second in goals amongst all defenseman and currently is fourth in the nation with a 0.96 point per game average.  Mangone netted his first career hat trick as part of a four-point weekend against CUW that earned him NCHA Defensive Player of the Week honors and a spot on the D3Hockey.com Team of the Week.

 

All-Freshman:

Jake Howie (Freshman, F, Grand Blanc, Mich.) - Jake Howie was a consistent contributor for the Sabre offense to earn a spot on the All-Freshman team.  Howie (9-8--17) had three multi-goal games with a five-point game on the road at Lake Forest.  The freshman forward also ranked 10th amongst all NCHA forwards with a +15 on-ice rating.

 

The full all-conference lists released by the NCHA can be viewed here.  Marian opens the Harris Cup at Blue Line hosting Concordia Wisconsin at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 24 in the first home playoff game since the 2004 MCHA Championship.
